Friend, the M5S: "The sentence is a warning. Let the past teach us, so as not to repeat the same mistakes"

The 5 Star Movement breaks its silence after the harsh ruling by the Court of Bari that condemned the Municipality of Foggia – the sole shareholder of AMICA SpA – to pay compensation of over 27 million euros for the bankruptcy of the historic municipal waste management company. In a statement released in recent hours, the M5S defines the verdict as “a warning” and a fundamental step towards shedding light on “an opaque, disastrous and unlawful management”.

The entire political season that preceded the collapse of the company is in the sights of the Five Star Movement, accused of having acted "in contempt of transparency, competence and legality", transforming AMICA "into a tool for clientelist management rather than an efficient company at the service of the community". The Movement recalls that it has always denounced the distortions linked to direct assignments and the lack of independent controls, also indicating in time the possibility of "a less painful transaction for the municipal coffers", which - according to them - "could have avoided such an impactful epilogue".

The 5 Star Movement's appeal is for a radical change of direction in the management of public companies: "We need clear rules, competent managers, effective controls and an administrative vision that puts the public interest at the center, not the profit of a few." Finally, the M5S calls for a broader reflection on the role of politics: "Those who have made mistakes will have to answer in the appropriate places, but politics has the duty to monitor, correct and prevent. So that what happened to AMICA never happens again."
